Can I Download My Old PS3 Games on PS5?
If you’re planning to upgrade to the latest PS5 console, you’re likely wondering if you’ll be able to download and play your beloved PS3 games on the new hardware. Unfortunately, the answer is no – at least, not natively.
Why Can’t PS3 Games Be Downloaded on PS5?
According to Mark Cerny, a console architect and long-time developer for Sony, the architecture of the PS3 is not compatible with the PS5, making it impossible for them to be emulated directly. This limitation is mainly due to the differing processing powers of the two consoles.
In a rare video game engineering article, it was mentioned that the PS4 hardware was not powerful enough to emulate the PS3, forcing Sony to choose a different emulator that only supports games that were released with a PS3-to-PS4 port in mind. However, this isn’t possible with PS1, PS2, or PS3 titles since there is no existing remastered or rebuilt code for these titles.
Are There Any Ways to Play PS3 Games on PS5?
While PS3 games won’t be downloadble directly to your PS5 console, there are other methods to play classic PS3 titles on the PS5::
• Streaming via PS Now: Sony has its own cloud gaming service called Play Station Now (PS Now). Through this platform, you can stream some PS3 games directly onto your PS5. While the gaming experience is compromised compared to native playing on the PS5, you’ll have access to more than 700 PS3 titles with a steady internet connection.
• Remasters and Re-Releases: PS3 games have been re-mastered for release on newer consoles or as part of PlayStation Now subscriptions. Examples of re-mastered games include the likes of Shadow of the Colossus (2018), Blue Toad Murder Files (2020), and Beyond: Two Souls (2015). Keep in mind that only specific select titles have received updates to fully utilize PS5 capabilities.
