Should I play Cyberpunk 2077 before Phantom Liberty?
The long-awaited Phantom Liberty DLC has finally arrived for Cyberpunk 2077, offering a new perspective on the world of Night City and introducing new mechanics, quests, and stories. Many players are unsure whether to play the main game or dive straight into the DLC. In this article, we’ll examine the necessary context and outline the best approach for enhancing your experience.
Understanding the Story Context
Phantom Liberty is separate from the main game storyline
A significant aspect of Phantom Liberty is that you don’t need to complete the main game to engage with the DLC. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty can be played independently of the original story, although some elements will be introduced or changed in the primary game after completing the Phantom Liberty story. This option allows new players to get a feel for the world of Night City and its diverse characters before investing time into the base game.
The Importance of Context and Character
The Phantom Liberty DLC adds a new set of characters and story arcs, including SoMi, Reed Kerivan, and Jacqueline Vex, among others. These introductions offer an exciting perspective on the world, exploring their motivations and conflicts. Jumping straight into Phantom Liberty without context from the original game may leave you less invested in these new narratives.
In-Depth Exploration and Side Quests
The main game allows for exploration of Night City, visiting various locations, and engaging in side quests to develop a deeper understanding of the world. Phantom Liberty builds upon this foundation by introducing new locations and quests. By starting with the main game, you’ll be better positioned to appreciate these additions to the game world.
RPG Mechanics and Systems
The base game focuses on building your character by upgrading attributes, skills, and weapons. Phantom Liberty introduces new RPG systems, including character customization, skill trees, and progression mechanics. Starting with the main game will allow you to experience the core aspects of Cyberpunk 2077’s RPG mechanics.
Benefits of Playing Both
- Enhanced Story Appreciation: Jumping into Phantom Liberty from the start might make some story beats and character moments less impactful due to missing context from the main game.
- Better understanding of character motivations: Following the story from the primary game, you’ll appreciate the introduction of new characters and story arcs more, as their motivations and conflicts make more sense within the framework of the game world.
Playing Cyberpunk 2077 Before Phantom Liberty: Key Points
In summary, here are key points to consider:
- Story Context: Although Phantom Liberty is separate, understanding the story and context from the main game improves the experience.

In Conclusion:
For a more effective and enjoyable experience, start with Cyberpunk 2077, explore its world and story, and then introduce Phantom Liberty into your narrative. The DLC offers numerous benefits when played after completion of the main game:
- Better story appreciation and character connections
