The naked human eye is capable of spotting objects and scenes in distant landscapes, but exactly how far is debated among experts. As far as we know, scientific studies and experiments have sought to answer this question by estimating the visible horizon.
The visible horizon
The visible horizon, also known as the horizontal limit of vision, refers to the maximum distance beyond which the curvature of the earth obstructs our view.
- At ground level, the average atmospheric conditions, height of the observer, obstacles, and refractive index of air make it difficult to predict when the visible horizon disappears under the horizon.
- One estimate suggests that for human eyes with standard pupil diameters (~30°) and refractions (typically around +59D to -55.5D), we cannot see beyond 10 kilometer (6.215 miles) without relying heavily on the surrounding topographical features or using high-tension lenses.
However, these numbers can extremely vary between countries and locations due to multiple factors:
• Weather systems
• Atmospheric composition: pollution, precipitation, fog, cloud, radiation
• Topographic undulations and obstacles
Even when these factors aren’t a significant issue, as the eye travels down any line of sight towards 180°, visual aberrations occur, increasing haze, glare, double vision, and light intensities that alter brightness perception.
