How Do You Play Dead Fish?
What is Dead Fish?
Dead Fish is a popular party game that has been around for centuries, and its popularity continues to grow. In this article, we will dive into the rules and regulations of playing Dead Fish and answer the question of how do you play dead fish.
Objective
The main objective of the game is to be the first player to get all the fish cards in their deck to the bottom of the discard pile. To do this, players must collect sets of fish cards with the same species and pattern, or collect a set of cards with the same fisherman, and then pass these cards to other players to fill their decks. Sounds easy, but there are twists and turns in this game that will challenge you!
How to Play
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to play Dead Fish:
Initial Setup
Before you start playing, make sure to shuffle the deck of fish cards and place them in the middle of the playing area. Each player draws a set number of cards from the deck and puts them in front of them. The number of cards each player draws varies, but typically it’s between 5-10 cards.
Gameplay
The game starts with a leader calling out "Dead Fish" and all the players should immediately lie down or make a fish shape with their bodies. When everyone has done this, the leader walks around and counts the number of players who have "died." This determines the number of points for the round.
- Fishermen:
The leader chooses one fisherman card and the first player to pass by will receive it.
Turns
In Dead Fish, players take turns saying "Dead Fish" to indicate that they have received a fisherman card.
- Playing Dead
When a player is on their turn and another player says "Dead Fish" they must stand up immediately and make a fish shape with their bodies, before returning to the previous lying down position. The fisherman card given is moved to the next player to their left, following suit.
- Chomping
Each fisherman card has a set number of chomps written on it, typically from 1 to 4. When a player stands up and plays the card, they take their right hand and clamps onto the fisherman’s waist, holding them as though they are reeling them in. Then they lower their hand to show everyone that they’ve been reeled in and put it back in place for their next turn. It looks like they’ve eaten up the fish. CHOMP! When there are no fish in your deck, that is an end of a player, and they sit on their deck.
Rounds
The game consists of multiple rounds until the cards are all dead.
Winning the Game
- Last Standing Player: The game is over and the last standing player takes the remaining points as there are no players remaining who have not caught fish in their deck, Winning the Dead Fish Card Game. When one player has 15 fish cards in their discard pile, they announce this loud enough for others to know, and in so saying, they immediately remove one fisherman from the center of the board for Winning Dead Fish
Tips and Variations
- New Card System: When new players are added to the game, they can play an empty card, without cards.
- Emptying Dead Fish: At any moment, a player may make a fish call if an empty card is the result.
