Can You Go Down in Rank in League of Legends?

When playing League of Legends, it’s crucial to be aware of how your rankings work. League of Legends is a ranking-based MOBA game that determines players’ skill levels and opponents based on their performances in matches. So, in this article, we will discuss the intricacies of League of Legends rankings, focusing on whether or not it’s possible to drop down in rank.

Why You Need to Know the League of Legends Ranking System

The Ranked Season: What is it and Why it Matters

A Ranked Season in League of Legends starts on a specified date every year and typically lasts about 11-12 months. During this time, players can compete against other players, win or lose, and their rank improves or declines. When a new season starts, each player is automatically set back to their account level as their ranking refreshes to the start. So, the rank resets.

Demotions and Decay

In League of Legends, there are two primary reasons you can go down in rank:

1. Demotions: This is the process where a team or player performs poorly over a set number of matches, leading to a change in their division. With demotions, the league takes away their win reward and LP points (win rewards) will go downward.

Demotion Cutoff: Losing consecutive matches, usually five in silver and gold division, in short-term perspective causes decay

Decay Rules

For Master and Grand Master ranks, players earn win rewards. There are separate rules for gold division ranking and other league of Legends rankings.

Master+: Win rewards earned over matches accumulate as "LPs"; the system loses this ‘LPs" value up to 20 "win rewards"

| Master (250 to -175), Grand Master(400 LP) | Loss Reward decay |

| Platinum+ (50), Diamond (-75 LP, up until -300LP)
