Are the Archons Demons?
The world of Genshin Impact is filled with magical creatures and entities, and one such group of entities is the Archons. But, are they demons? In this article, we will delve into the world of Archons and explore this question.
Origins of the Archons
The Archons are a group of seven gods, also known as the Seven Archons, who preside over the seven regions of Teyvat, established after the Archon War 2,000 years ago. [1]
Gnostic Associations
In Gnosticism, archontes refers to the planetary rulers of the material world, seen as lesser divine beings tasked with overseeing the cosmos. [2] These lesser divine beings, who are often described as demonic, are connected to the 7 planets, the celestial spheres. According to some Gnostic texts, Archons became associated with the planet gods. [3] With this in mind, we can see parallels between Gnostic Archontes and Genshin Impact’s Seven Archons, leading us to a possible link between the two entities.

There are arguments for and against the theory that Archons in Genshin Impact are demons. Here is a summary:

Venti, locally known as an air god, takes on a demon name, Barbatos. This name seems to allude to Barbatos, a demon considered the President of Hell in some mythological accounts.
Archons vs. Archontes vs. Planetary Rulers
This confusion between these terms can blur the lines between what’s considered evil and what’s good. For example, the Archon War happened two thousand years prior to the Genshin Impact story, which seems to parallel the concept of the planets themselves being forces of chaos vs. divine order.
This article cannot conclusively prove the point that Genshin Impact’s Archons are, in fact, demons or not demons. However, when considering parallels with Gnostic notions of the Planetary Rulers, the argument that Archons are demons may have some merit.
Conclusion Archons’ benevolent intentions and non-malevolent actions have led some to disagree with this thesis.
