Yes, the movie is still in the making. In fact, back in November 2022, Netflix and The Coalition announced a live-action Gears of War film, as well as an adult animated series.

What do we know so far?

1. Project Overview: The live-action film is being developed with the game’s creators at The Coalition, while the animated series is being created in-house at Netflix. The exact plot and release dates remain under wraps.

Additional Details

In 2017, Sony Pictures won the rights to adapt Gears of War into a film, and Amy Ellis was hired as the screenplay writer. While the status of the movie remains unknown, it is not related to the Netflix deal.

Moreover, in January 2019, Starlight Entertainment announced that Gears of War would receive a cinematic universe, covering multiple titles, including novels, television shows, and video games.

Netflix and the Coalition’s Contribution

So, what did we miss? Well, it all started when the gaming platform, Tencent Holdings, acquired Epic Games and gained access to the franchise. In February 2019, Toshi Moriuchi, Executive Vice President of Tencent Video, was appointed as Senior Vice President at Epic Games, while Chen Tao, a vice president, was named Head of Narrative at Epic.

As if that wasn’t enough, in 2018, The Coalition, then known as Turn 10 Studios, teamed up with Netflix to develop an animated series! And wouldn’t you believe it – they announced more content last year, only to stay mum on every other piece of information except The Coalition’s deal with Sony Pictures.

One of the recent announcements revolved around Gears of War 6. Sony Interactive Entertainment revealed plans to release the 2023 title on February 4, 2014; however, when Cinematica Entertainment Partners took to social media, they introduced their newest film, inspired by these events.
