Can a Blinded Creature Take an Opportunity Attack?

Opportunity attacks are an essential mechanic in 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons, allowing players to strike enemies that wander out of range or pass by within arm’s length. But, what about blinded creatures? Can they take an opportunity attack if they can’t see who’s attacking them? Let’s dive into the rules to find out.

No, a blinded creature can’t take an opportunity attack.

It’s plain and simple – a creature that’s been blinded automatically fails any ability check that requires sight ([PHB, 326]). According to the basic rules of opportunity attacks:

"…make an attack of opportunity against a creature you can see…"

(emphasis added). Since a blinded creature cannot see, they cannot fulfill this requirement to take an opportunity attack. The situation is not contingent on any additional conditions – a simple, fundamental connection between visual acuity and the attack.

Is there anything special about invisibility and the same thing?

No. Though a player may find value in employing invisible allies (or employing an invisibility spell for themselves), both attacking an invisible creature’ (a creature one cannot see) and attacking an attackable who cannot see an attacker’) are essentially tied to their sight capacity; an additional consideration lies hidden within that complexity, specifically with grappling. The core point visibility affects more than attacking**, in case you would miss out important aspects! Grapling’s the way I make a clear note; both parties and it could turn the result; or another condition).

A little bit deeper, does RAW matter if there is additional conditions.

Some individuals might expect certain rules within specific abilities, for each additional layer within RAW you will receive different and maybe contradictory to previous cases from various forums or posts without being truly the Rule we will now start from [dmg4e.org]. What these are saying to those other things on those topics without knowing we do what does this bring?
