Can a hot PC cause lag?
A hot PC is one of the most common culprits that can lead to sluggish performance and frustratingly slow response times. High temperatures can throttle the performance of your PC’s central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU), leading to slowdowns and, in some cases, crashes.
The Connection between Heat and Performance
As mentioned, overheating is one of the primary reasons your PC might experience lag. The reason for this lies in the way the components function within your system. Both CPU and GPU components have thermally designed throttles, which restrict the number of operations they can perform per second based on temperature thresholds. These thermally-induced throttles kick in to prevent overheating and ensure the system remains within safe operating parameters.
For example, modern CPU components will throttle the performance automatically to prevent temperatures above 105°C (221°F) to avoid permanent damage.
- Heat-Accelerated Sluggishness: Excessive temperatures lead to thermal throttling, which limits CPU-GPU performance and thus introduces sluggishness in PC activities. This issue may exhibit different symptoms such as screen lag, application launch lag, or slower than normal computer performance.
