Can Oathbreaker Paladin Still Use Divine Smite?
Oathbreakers are an intriguing and unique Paladin subclass introduced in the world of 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. For many Paladin fans, this archetype seems like the ultimate play-as-a-Villain moment. What happens, then, if an Oathbreaker wants to harness their martial might and deal Radiant Damage to their foes using Divine Smite? Do the shackles of Oaths hold true, or are Paladins truly set free when they choose this path? Let’s dig deeper!
Yes, Oathbreaker Paladins can still use Divine Smite
One would assume, given the lore of Oath of Vengeance (Page 115, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything), an Oathbreaker would completely lose the ability to Smite Foes, now more driven by self-interested whims than righteous judgment. Instead, it becomes evident in the game, you continue to retain some connection with your original abilities.
At 2nd level, when you take an Action to Hit, you can still cast a bonus action spell using Divine Smite, without requiring Oath spells being prepared previously. Your new paladinish energy pours into unleashing this spectacular force unto your enemies (Rules Analysis, 95).
Some key aspects make these modifications shine more accurately upon our chosen path: `paladins- divine smite- rulesanalysis.html page 95). So:
