The Mongol invasion of Japan, led by the fearsome Khotun Khan, has left a trail of destruction and death in its wake. As Jin Sakai, a samurai who has lost his way and is forced to adapt to survive, you must face the final showdown with the legendary warrior who has been terrorizing your homeland. But, Can You Defeat Khan in Ghost of Tsushima?
Cutscene and No Victory Over Khan
Unfortunately, players are met with a cutscene after reaching the final confrontation with Khotun Khan. In this cutscene, Jin sacrifices his way of life as a samurai and the chance to defeat Khan to ensure the survival of Japan. This means that Jin does not actually defeat Khan, instead choosing a different path. The conclusion of the main story can be seen as Jin saving Japan, albeit not through a traditional combat victory over Khan.
Plot Wise, the Same Story Advances
The games’ narrative continues to move forward even without a conclusive defeat of Khan. In the midst of the ongoing struggle for Japan’s liberation, players must face challenges, side quests, and rival clan leaders. It is here that the significance of Lord Shimura’s, Jin’s uncle, motivations and actions play a pivotal role in advancing the storyline.
Is it Really a Defeat?
In a meta-sensory perspective, can a character truly lose when they have chosen their path as a means of self-actualization, preservation of their people, and embracing their true role in their society? When you reframe the conclusion from Jin Sakai loses to Khotun Khan to Jin Sakai learns and chooses a different way.
What’s Next for Jin?
Following this pivotal moment in the narrative, Jin dedicates his life to the duty he owes to his lord and Japan. He chooses the role of a messenger and guerrilla fighter to rally those who are anti-Mongol and gather the various clans to present a unified front against their oppressors. This approach signifies that Jin still impacts the world through non-confrontational, covert operations.
In the same vein, by refusing to engage in futile confrontations with the relentless and overpowered Mongolian war machine, Jin adapts his strategy to best fit his circumstances. With an end to the battle on the battlefield, this signifies an end to an unattainable outcome (e.g., direct confrontation against Khan). From a deeper perspective, a triumph that transcends military defeat arises.
Will the Quest for Victory over Khan Reappear?
No confirmation has been provided for additional content or patches in future updates that will permit defeating Khan. So far, the narrative choice Jin took has been depicted as definitive, and as it appears, there aren’t plans to alter that ending for the time being. Future updates may have DLC with new story content that deviates from this decision.
