Can you import Mass Effect 3 to Andromeda?
The question on the minds of many Mass Effect fans: Can you somehow import your character from the original trilogy into Mass Effect: Andromeda?
Unfortunately, the answer is no, you can’t import your Mass Effect 3 character into Mass Effect: Andromeda. The games take place in different galaxies and timelines, making it impossible to integrate the two. The games are designed as standalone sequels, each with its own unique storyline and ending.
Mass Effect Timeframe
Before we go into the specifics, a quick refresher on the Mass Effect timeline:
The original trilogy consists of the games Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, set in our galaxy, Milky Way (2148-2183). The story follows Command Shepard, an elite pilot, as he/she rescues the galaxy from The Reapers.
Mass Effect: Andromeda sets 600 years after Mass Effect 3, just before the birth of Saren’s grandson, Kalisto. It takes us to the Andromeda galaxy, exploring new colonies and encountering a new thread of alien life.
Clearly, the Andromeda Initiative starts decades before, during the Reapers wars, and ends long ago. The stories are linked, but as separate standalone stories.
Why imports are not possible
Another crucial aspect: the engine and game systems used were significantly different. Mass Effect 3’s save mechanic is not compatible with ME: Andromeda:
- Bioware’s statement: "They’re two completely different [games], designed for play on different consoles, to play on different platforms; and the characters, though they share the same iconic [Mass Effect] aesthetic, are unique to themselves."
ME3 Post-Game Mechanics
And, even if we bypass the timeline aspect, transferring ME3 data wouldn’t be feasible. Here why:
- Save and Load: Save files will not work. ME2 and ME3 save your progress, which is an entirely different story from ME: Andromeda’s procedural generation; no direct linking.
• Character Model: When ME3 finished, those characters were, well—dead. Resurrect them? No chance. Spoiler alert. You can’t import Commander Shepard or Asari Liara into Ryder’s story without significant backstory rewrites. It seems, the next generation requires new characters!
Why not?
Why didn’t Bioware create that seamless transition between the Andromeda games? Considering the vast following and curiosity about the game’s origins, it could have contributed to a higher replay, more engagement.
- There might be plans for multi-generational stories further down the line, in which case linking characters could be more feasible.
- No compatibility issues due to massive differences in games’ foundation, engine, and technical aspects.
The Mass Effect franchise is famous for making choices matter; however:
- Alternative Endings: ME: Andromeda’s eight endings provide closure for both the storyline and the gameplay. (You can also explore through replaying certain choices.
Conclusion
To paraphrase the master of choice, Commander Shepard: Don’t worry; there be no import magic for a reason. Two separate sets of games exist for better storytelling, replay value and overall gaming experiences. Appreciate the spin-offs.
The Mass Effect franchise took bold steps toward exploring complex storylines; however it is crucial to respect how these stories diverge by embracing the fresh start.
