In the world of Path of Exile, a corrupted item is an item that has been afflicted with corruption, which makes it unusable in the current game state. As the item is corrupted, it is no longer editable through normal means, including adding mods, changing mods, or removing mods.

However, under specific conditions and exceptions, a corrupted item can still be modified.

Conditions for modifying corrupted items

• Use a Tainted Currency on a Corrupted Item: While it is not always easy to come by, certain corrupted items can be traded or acquired through various methods, and can be upgraded through Tainted Currency to higher-tier corrupted items or rare unique items.
• Using a Vaal Orb on a Corrupted Item: Vaal orbs have a unique property allowing you to modify the corrupted state of an item. Once Vaal orbs are used, it becomes possible to once again change the mods or change the item’s condition back to its original.

Benefits of modifying a corrupted item

• Corruption can be restored: Once a corrupted item has been modified, there are opportunities to restore corrupted modifiers that were lost and convert corrupted items into potential currency for other items with increased strength.
• Vaal orbs can allow unique mod changes: Depending on the Vaal orbs you have, you have more chances to change rare corrupted item mods, unlocking further options for your own strategy or playstyle customization.
• Corruption has many benefits: At various points in the development, certain corrupted items acquired via crafting or trading offered different stats, which enhanced strength for the player compared to its original state as they got corrupted.
