Do Pokémon Fight in the Wild?
When we think of Pokémon, the first thing that comes to mind is the colorful world of battling, battling and more battling. After all, the franchise was created around the concept of "catching ’em all" and then watching our favorite Pokémon battle against other trainers. But does this mean that Pokémon truly engage in combat in their natural habitats? The short answer is no, but there’s much more to it than a simple yes or no.
Most Wild Pokémon Avoid Conflict
In the main Pokémon games and anime, most wild Pokémon will evade any potential battles. As has been shown in-game, wild Pokémon are known to flee when they sense their potential opponents. This may raise questions about whether capturing these Pokémon is indeed violent and exploitative. Does capturing a wild Pokémon then equal animal cruelty? For us, the answer will be no based on the franchise’s treatment and portrayal of these adorable and fantastical creatures. While capturing Pokémon can potentially traumatize them, at no point does the games nor anime suggest that violence should be inflicted upon captured animals. In fact, when a Pokémon is rescued in the games, or captured in the anime (see: Ash’s Pikachu being sent back to its nest for it to be raised to normal), it is depicted that no harm is done even when they are transported, as long as humane transportation methods are used in some cases.
Friendships and Bonds
For years, the franchise’s slogan has been "there is no such thing as bad Pokémon, only inexperienced ones." This highlights Pokémon training as a way not to dominate or enslave Pokémon, but rather train partners in this imaginative world. This train-pokemon bond is where love, trust, teamwork and friendship are nurtured.
The Games themselves suggest that Pokémon can live as wild animals, unaffected
In the games itself when you go to new territories, you see they aren’t fighting with your rivals, they’re running through the grass, evolving at their own pace; Pokémon are shown as fully able to live their normal wild lives, suggesting that they can happily go about their daily affairs free from conflict, unlike in the battling that would ensue in trainers against trainers. It has its own way of telling.
In-Show Example: Riolu (Diamond and Pearl season, episode 42): Fighting and Bonding between rival trainers
A brief side note: when these characters, like Ash & company, they do know other trainers, but often share their Pokémon and understand bond, which speaks to the franchise’s focus on education for the kids, an integral part of Pokémon from Day 1.
- When Ash and his allies captured Riolu (no harm done! the Pokémon is sent a gentle message to go freely once it’s rescued), they bonded with other trainer rivals to let others learn about this training system. In that season/episode, Ash understands its rival’s feelings from battles and shares knowledge they need to grow.
Risks of Capture-Breed-Train, Risks of PokéBall use and More Controversies:
Regarding trainers, Capture breed trains, trainers choose when to breed for desirable genetic traits. They keep healthy Pokémon in a facility so they can have best breeds. This doesn’t prove they are being fought when captured. No capture. No breed. Still good.
Pokémon themselves are naturally not inclined to fight unless pushed/forced to, unlike any other species, by force or manipulation, these situations are not force-driven.
Poké-Balls, used throughout these games, have many, many uses (evolves, heal, travel/transport) for no combat, and even use cases where no harm is done.
In Conclusion…: In the Pokémon Franchise, wild Pokémon themselves may not engage in a world of battling. And they don’t, though captured, in its habitat, and other locations, Pokémon do avoid this kind of violence like when Ash’s Pikachu left when Ash tried to do battling. The games clearly promote a bond between trainers and Pokémon, which highlights compassion & understanding, a concept kids learn from Pokémon adventures too.
