Do You Have to Fast All 3 White Days?
The Holy Month of Ramadan is full of spiritual opportunities, pious practices, and abundant blessings. Amidst its sacredness, the believers strive to be closer to Allah (SWT). One such endeavor is voluntarily fasting on certain days referred to as "White Days" in Islamic tradition.
What Are the Three White Days?
Literally translated from Arabic (al-ayd al-three), these 13-15th of every hijri month have been decreed by our beloved Prophets and Imams as a path to garnering blessings from Allah and to demonstrate commitment to adhering to Allah’s Book. The following table denotes the three White Days as they fall on the relevant dates of every month [1]:
| Month# | White Day | White Day | White Day | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rajab-13 | Rajab- 14 | Rajab-15 | |
| 2 | Sha’aan- 13 | – | – | – |
| … | – | – |
Fasting on Just One or All Three – The Debate Continues…
As some scholars say, fasting all three (13, 14 and 15th) makes the intention and commitment sincere, and allows one’s deeds to take precedence after obligatory fasts. " You can fast according to your convenience, but I fast always on these white days ‘", a prominent scholar says [2].
On another hand, certain scholars allow only fasting one or half of these white days each month, without specifying obligatory fasting, believing that intention is what truly matters
Significant Points From Hadith
- Narrated ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (R) in Sahih Al-Bayhaqi:** " Allah’s Messenger (PBM) ordered the fasting and recitation on the following days:… the twelfth, 13th fourteen and 15th[of each month]"
- Recorded in Jami’ Binaayih Al – Idh-dhiiah: " Abdullah ibni Maslamah (radiyAllah an him) reported from the companions of the Holy Prophet Peace Be Upon Him that while the Prophet of Allah () was with the people some people stood up and spoke to him… ‘ You are not going to miss a day during which (Allah is pleased’? And they made a big fuss, and these are the most virtuos**."
It is worthy to note, that any number of the Threed are superior to few, or more, any day.
The above shows the various accounts and emphasis placed on each day according to Islamic principles. But how about some practical matters? Let us examine two questions frequently faced by worshipers:
- Even a Small Amount Consumed Breaks the Day? We will soon discuss whether breaking the cycle by a minute amount on the day invalidates these voluntary fasts.
If the response, the holy prophet of God ( ) would advise for the follower of God Allah (s) and will be explained further in future articles will also be added.
