Does Far Cry 6 Never End?
The anticipation is building as you delve into the world of Far Cry 6. You’re ready to unleash your fury on the unsuspecting foes, to save the island of Yara from the clutches of oppression. But as the hours turn into days, you begin to wonder – will the game ever come to an end?
To answer this question, we need to dive deeper into the game’s design, mechanics, and the conclusion. Here’s a thorough analysis to help you get a better understanding of where you’re headed in your journey.
Multiple Endings or One Big Final Fight?
First things first, let’s bust a myth. Contrary to popular belief, there are only two distinct endings in Far Cry 6. These endings come after completing the main campaign and finishing the side-missions, and are affected by the choices you’ve made throughout the game. But are these endings more than just a fancy dance at the end?
How the Endings Compare
To put things in perspective, here’s a comparison between the two endings:
| Ending | Details | Time Required |
|---|---|---|
| Ending 1: Freedom | Liberate the island, and have Dani (your character) reflect on the journey taken. | 35 hours to 40 hours, depending on the player |
| Ending 2: No Liberation | The liberation effort fails, and Antón Castillo (the primary antagonist) takes control, ending in a devastating conflict. | 38-45 hours, depending on the player |
While they are different, these endings share the same general approach and structure. It appears that the endings won’t dramatically change the final moments of the game. If you want multiple endings with varying gameplay challenges or drastically different outcomes, Far Cry 6 isn’t quite up to the task in this aspect.
Getting There – The Gameplay Trail
Let’s assume the above holds true – and most likely, it is. Here’s how long you might expect to stay invested:
- Completing the main campaign alone requires about 25 hours, leaving around 25 hours of side content before you see the first (and main) ending.
In a world where so many open-world games continue to stretch their narrative duration with seemingly endless fetch-quests, Far Cry 6 remains more focused, presenting a condensed mainline story and side-content pool.
No Hidden Ending
It’s now worth addressing the topic of a possible hidden ending (often known as the true or 100% complete ending). Unfortunately, unlike other titles, Far Cry 6 doesn’t feature an alternate hidden final mission or secret route that leads to different endings.
You play the story as designed – follow the narrative beats and explore the world at will, enjoying the open-space, free-roam vibe that has become a standard part of the Far Cry franchise. No matter which path you choose, ultimately, the same core of story content will guide the player.
Post-Finishing: After-the-Storm
While playing the final missions won’t dramatically shift the landscape beyond what we’ve explored (ending aside), you won’t feel entirely short-changed in the process:
- Far Cry 6 features an impressive selection of vehicles and a beautiful rendered environment that will still make your final moments on Yara island a visually and audio-sensory journey to cherish.
- Take part in secrets, Easter eggs, or special quests (unconnected to the story – though connected to other stories or gameplay mechanics).
However, we should caution fans not to expect anything outside of this standard setup that we typically see in such a linearly-paced Far Cry installment or comparable open-world franchise games.
In essence, your experience will boil down to around 50 hours for all side-missions and secondary quests to be complete**, giving you a total, in-game, main-mission-end-to-end-to-really-done experience lasting almost twice that, but less time when compared to earlier entries like Far Cry: Blood Dragon.
While 50 hours might be above average, considering many new titles average around 8-10 hours for complete-ist gamers, it’s an easily manageable playtime commitment within a Far Cry experience without ever needing to consider multi-player.
That said, Far Cry 6 maintains a good blend of the core mechanics to leave you fulfilled upon finishing the campaign story without making it an afterthought once you complete what was given.
There are moments, for sure, we miss exploring a little-known feature here and there which has potential to spice gameplay with even more possibilities than now given. As to "the game" Far Cry 6 ever to be endless? I wish the concept was even farther down the line – something as interesting as Eternity Warfare!. Alas, with 2 main end-scenarios and minimal extensions for ‘completion,’ far from eternal.
