Does Ward only Apply to Opponents?

A common misconception in the Magic: The Gathering community is that Ward only affects abilities controlled by opponents. This is a misconception, but it is understandable, especially for newer players. Ward only applies to spells and abilities, no matter the source, whenever a permanent becomes the target of one.

Types of Ward

There are two types of Ward in Magic: Triggered Ability and Static Ability. Triggered Abilities work when a specific event or condition occurs, such as a creature becoming the target of an ability. Static Abilities, on the other hand, work unconditionally.

Ward as a Triggered Ability

One of the most important factors to remember is that a Ward Ability is only relevant when the permanent it resides on becomes the target of a spell or ability from an opponent. Ward does not care who owns the ability or what spell it is; what matters is the source of the ability, not its nature.
