Has a SAS Ever Been Captured?
For years, the Special Air Service (SAS), Britain’s most elite and feared special forces unit, has been synonymous with speed, stealth, and dominance in the art of special operations. However, is there a truth to be uncovered that these brave servicemen have never been caught in the line of fire?
Basra Prison Incident, 2005: The Rare Occasion When SAS was Captured
Two SAS Officers in Custody
To date, only one well-documented incident has put an SAS officer in cuffs: the Basra prison incident in 2005. During an operation to snatch a radical Shia cleric in Basra, Iraq, two uncovered SAS personnel found themselves taken into Iraqi custody after they allegedly engaged Iraqi police forces at a checkpoint.
The two special operatives, whose identities are still protected to this day, were members of an operation aimed at keeping surveillance on an Iraqi Police official known for alleged links to crime and corruption. Though not a prisoner of war in the classical sense, these two soldiers were brought in for questioning and their eventual fate is still undisclosed.
