How do I import a singleplayer world?

Importing Singleplayer Worlds in Minecraft

When creating a singleplayer world in Minecraft, sometimes you may want to transfer that world to another computer or server for any reason. This article will cover the steps on how to import a singleplayer world into Minecraft.

Downloading a World

Before we can export a world, we need to understand the purpose of downloading a world in the first place. Downloading a world, sometimes referred to as "exporting", helps you to transfer your singleplayer world into a format that can be imported back into Minecraft on a different computer or server.

Exporting and Unzipping a World

First, you need to open your Minecraft settings and select the world you want to transfer from the list of available worlds. Right-click on the world and select Properties. In the World Folder, click Export, this will save the world in ._MCWorld format. Keep an eye on the file size; typically, it’s around 5 GB and above.

Once you have saved your .MCWorld file, find its location on your computer. Make a note of the location, we’ll need it later. Now, find 7-Zip in the Start menu (Run as administrator) and browse the same directory where you saved your World.MCWorld folder and start extracting the files. Click "Extract" and choose where to save the extracted files.

File Format

The.MCWorld file format is created exclusively for Minecraft and is readable exclusively by Minecraft. This special package includes all the resources we need to import the world such as maps, textures, and assets (e.g., blocks, mobspawn, and more).

Now your world is extracted, and this collection of files is ready for further processes.

Importing a World on New Computer or Server

Now that we have all extracted files, we can import these contents into a new Minecraft world by replacing the default world folder with this prepared .MCWorld. Start new Minecraft, and navigate to the root game directory. Here we look for the saves directory then locate the world_name/.MCWorld folder there:

  • Local world folder: %appdata%.minecraftsaves(World Name)world world_name is the name given your when you created the world.)
The new world folder directory is where we now install our extracted files.

Instructions below

  1. Extract everything from the .MCWorld save into the new world folder.
    • Start a new Minecraft game and see this new world in the new Computer/Server.

Step Two: Transfer the World through Networking

One very useful feature of the multiplayer (LAN) mode is the sharing (transferring) process (for worlds). Once joined in the same network, another peer/user can transfer the world on remote (server) side

Another method is to use this to share the world with all registered players, which is in direct access to the server.

A further step is to use the internet if there is no direct accessibility locally.
