Early Impressions

I used Noctowl from the very beginning (level 3 HootHoot) all the way through to the Pokémon League (around 40-50ish) and it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either. It was a great stall and all, but that’s all I got out of it. It can hypnosis, and that’s it.

Physical Attackers vs. Noctowl

Physical attackers in general are a pain for Noctowl as it has horrible physical bulk, which leaves it 2HKOed by pretty much any decently strong move. Electric-types such as Rotom-S, Eelektross, and Electabuzz can also easily KO Noctowl, only fearing Toxic.

Comparing Noctowl to Pidgeot

From my experience, Pidgeot is a much better physical sweeper. Of course, Noctowl has the Psychic abilities, but if your Gengar can cover those, then I’d say go with Pidgeot.

Countering Noctowl

The best Pokémon Go Xatu counters are Mega Gengar, Mega Tyranitar, Mega Diancie, Shadow Tyranitar, Shadow Electivire, and Mega Banette. Noctowl is a Normal/Flying Pokémon, and has weaknesses to Rock, Electric, and Ice-type moves. Electric types and Rock types are also resistant to Flying-type moves.

Moves Effective Against Noctowl

Noctowl is vulnerable to the following moves:

• Rock-type moves (2x damage)
• Electric-type moves (2x damage)
• Ice-type moves (2x damage)

Is There a Mega Noctowl?

Mega Xatu is an enigma; it bears quite the resemblance to Zapdos, but has a notable loss of physical bulk and trades a great Electric/Flying typing for a still decent but generally inferior Psychic/Electric typing.
