Battalion to Brigade Size
To begin with, let’s establish the hierarchy starting from the smallest unit upward. A squad typically consists of 7 to 14 soldiers under the command of a segregant. Companies, on the other hand, are larger units consisting of 60 to 260 soldiers, led by an officer with the rank of captain or major. An infantry battalion, which is the primary force of an army, spans around 500 to 1,000 soldiers, commanded by a lieutenant colonel.
Between Brigade and Division
Larger than a battalion yet smaller than a division are brigades, these units comprise a few smaller units like battalions and range from 3000 to 5,000 soldiers. However, there are some important exceptions to this rule due to historical reasons. To clarify, armor or Ranger units are regiments, which can operate independently and consist of troops ranging from 300 to 5,000 troops. In contrast to this, Special Force units are called units, and these operate using a smaller scale.
It is important to note is that while regiments comprise of soldiers and have many similarities with battalions, they can also support themselves with separate artillery company, which provides a strategic advantage in battles. An infantry brigade or regiment, therefore, with its support unit is around 3000 to the 5000 troops more than an infantry battalion consisting of soldiers.
