The Origins of Pikachu
Atsuko Nishida, a renowned Pokedex designer and illustrator who worked on the original anime series, revealed in an interview that Pikachu’s design was modeled after a squirre! Yes! You read that right… a squirrel, not a mouse or rabbit. Apparently, the concept of adding an electric type to our beloved Pokémon series was floating around, and Nishida-san chose a familiar, cute creature that children could relate to.
Did you know? Pikachu in Japanese is read as Pitaka, meaning "rice paddy grasshopper," not "mouse" despite its physical appearance.
