Here’s an article on the topic Was Nintendo founded in 1900?
It’s a common myth, but Nintendo was not founded in 1900! In fact, the Company was founded on September 23, 1889, by Fusajiro Yamauchi. What’s the story behind their founding? Let’s start from the beginning!
Early Years of Video Games
Nintendo was always known for its love and passion for playing cards; in fact, their current logo is inspired by old Japanese playing cards called Hokmado. 1895 was a massive year for Nintendo; with the introduction of Western-designed playing cards, it introduced a new era for gamers. This was a successful venture, and it only grew from there!
Despite the success, Yamauchi-san wanted to look into other opportunities, aside from playing cards. An opportunity arose when Hanada Shokai, in 1889, founded a playing card factory but went bankrupt. Fusajiro Yamauchi thought this was the perfect move to take over and produce his own playing cards!
The First Era of Nintendo
By joining forces with Hanada-shokai, Fusaijro Yamauchi became the owner of several playing card factories and offices. 1889 – 1966, those were the years that define Nintendo’s first era:
- 1889, September 23rd — Fusajiro founded Nintendo Karuta as Yamane Nintendo.
- Between 1889-1866, Nintendo grew bigger, with the number card factories increasing from one(1) to ten; it also expanded into games, toys, and music.
