Was Stardew Valley made by 1 person?
Stardew Valley, a farming simulation game with RPG elements, was a massive hit when it was released in 2016. The game was praised for its charming visuals, engaging gameplay, and the fact that it was developed by a single person. That’s right, a single person.
Before we dive into the development process, let’s ask the question: how can one person create such an amazing game? How is it possible for Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone to tackle solo development of a project with such scope and ambition? Let’s explore how.
Eric Barone and his solo journey
As a gamer, music producer, and artist, Barone was inspired by various games, including Rune Factory, Minecraft, and Harvest Moon. From 2012 to 2016, Barone worked tirelessly to design and develop Stardew Valley in his free time while being a part-time graphic artist. During this time, he was also releasing an album every year for independent music projects.
As someone who had never commercially sold a game before, the journey was not only incredibly challenging but also educational for Barone. Speaking at PAX Prime, Barone shared 5 key lessons learned while developing Stardew Valley: communication, commitment, reception, iteration, and reality-checks.
Solo-development challenges and triumphs
Developing a game requires a significant amount of creativity, coding, animation, and sound design, tasks that can be extremely isolating and overwhelming, particularly for a solo developer like Barone. According to Barone, at least 40% to 50% of Stardew Valley’s source code was rewritten during testing alone.
Some of the many challenges faced by Barone include:
• Balancing game development with social engagements and work commitments
• Managing multiple roles in production, such as concept, design, programming, audio, and art
• Testing and fine-tuning game mechanics alone
• Dealing with the weight of pressure while working on a tight release schedule
• Resisting burnout despite significant progress and encouragement
By overcoming these challenges and continually refining the game based on feedback, Barone demonstrates the value of being true to his vision as well as embracing the uncertainties in game development.
Behind-the-scenes insights: Eric Barone’s artbook
For those intrigued about the artistic process involved, Barone has since authored an art book called "The Art and Heart of Stardew Valley". In this fascinating release, he shares many candid insights and anecdotes throughout Stardew Valley‘s development and features exclusive concept artwork and sketches.
A staggering 80% to 90% of his work, including in-game assets, was single-handled by Barone over the years. Moreover, he had to find methods to ensure consistency without formal training or experience working alongside a team.
For comparison, it’s significant that 80% to 90% of art assets, including buildings and characters, were rendered uniquely by Barone while another 10% would contribute to game development under licensed agreements or open resources online.
Impact, Influence, and Legacy: One person’s impact on indie gaming
Stardew Valley has become one of the most successful farming games ever created, raking in over 23.4 million copies to date, with much thanks to Barone’s devotion and vision. For new developers, this inspires hopes that, with conviction, determination, and flexibility, they can also rise beyond the "limits of solo development"
Throughout the process, players supported Barone through donations, updates with new features, expansions for the game, etc.) and received updates via Discord and Twitter. Now known as ConcernedApe, Eric Barone founded ConcernedApe Games to promote awareness of Stardew Valley during its initial release on September 27, 2016.
