What Are the Odds of Hitting Yourself in Confusion?
When it comes to Pokémon battles, confusion can be a common affliction, especially with the unpredictable moves of today’s Pokémon games. The question on every trainer’s mind is, what are the odds of hitting yourself in confusion?
How Confusion Works
For those who might not know, confusion is a status effect that Pokémon can receive during battle. When a Pokémon is afflicted with confusion, it starts to become disoriented, causing it to attack randomly. However, there are some special cases where confusion can get out of hand, making it difficult to control and predict.
The Numbers
According to the stats, there’s a 50% chance that confusion will have no effect on the target Pokémon. Sounds simple enough! However, things get tricky when multiple attacks are rolled. Confusion has an additional chance to cause confusion, regardless of the damage dealt, making it hard to tell what will happen next.
| Attack | Damage | |
|---|---|---|
| Roll 1 | Hitting opponent | 5-70 |
| Randomly hits opponent | 20% chance |
Odds of Hitting Yourself in Confusion
So, what’s the probability of hitting yourself in confusion?
| Attacks | Confused | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yes | Hits opponent with reduced power |
| 1 | No | Opponent absorbs attack |
| 2 | Yes | May hit self instead of opponent |
| or opponent + self (rare) |
Given the confusion status effect has a random chance of success, our calculations get interesting:
- 50% chance that confusion will affect the Pokémon (either making it confused or hitting opponent)
- 40% chance it will affect Pokémon, while opponent attacks will be made
- 10% chance you’ll miss the opponent while the other 10% will randomly hit yourself!
