What do you need to host a Valheim server?
In this article, we’ll explore the necessary steps and requirements to host a Valheim server, enabling you to play the game with your friends. From server-side setup to optimization techniques, we’ll cover the essentials to ensure a seamless experience for all players.
Installing the Valheim Dedicated Server Tool
The first step in hosting a Valheim server is to obtain and install the Dedicated Server Tool provided by the game’s developer, Iron Gate Studio. This tool is required for hosting a public Valheim server. To do this:
- Head over to the Valheim dedicated server downloads page.
- Click on the link corresponding to your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Run the installer and follow the setup wizard’s instructions to complete the installation process.
- Note the port and IP address associated with your server for later configuration.
Server Settings
Once the server is set up, it’s crucial to configure it accordingly to ensure a smooth and stable experience for players.
Start Headless Server
- Locate the "start_headless_server.bat" (or.exe) file, typically in the server install folder (C:SteamsteamappscommonValheim).
- Double-click the file to open it in Notepad.
-
Change the lines starting with
game_instanceto include the relevant settings:
•game_instance.world_seed: Set the unique ID for your server’s world.
•game_instance.world_name: Give your server’s world a name.
*…and so on (customizable settings can vary, be sure to review the doco for details) - Save the file, exit Notepad, and retry running the headless server.
Copied Existing World Files to your Host Machine
Optionally, if you created an existing world file previously (e.g., saved under worlds folder) and want to set up a new server to inherit that world’s save file:
- Navigate to File Manager settings on your server and enter your server’s password or confirm the prompt if applicable).
- Drag-and-drop the desired world folder files (entire folders, not just contents, to maintain correct game setup) from your preferred device (computer or online) to the server.
Remember to keep backups! Keep your server folder safely separate from the rest.
Setting up Firewalld and Opening Server to the Public (Security Options)
Before accessing the server, we recommend restricting access to a desired sub-network or LAN through security settings. Be prepared!
Setup Local File Sharing
Allow remote files to be read/accessed from the same system with File and Print Sharing.
Alternative methods for Publicly-accessible Server:
Linux: Set permissions within directories (chmod +)…
Windows: Inheritance and file properties configuration required…
Securing Your Server – Config File and Password (Secure Socket Layer – SSL or SSL/TLS Certificate Configuration Required)
Implement best practice security measures. Choose whether to:
