What Happened to Eric in The Forest?

Eric, the troubled father figure in The Forest, undergoes a traumatic experience throughout the game’s storyline. His story unfolds as he tries to take care of his children and find his way through a mysterious island filled with challenges and terror.

Ending of the Game

Without giving away too many spoilers, it is safe to say that Eric’s character takes a drastic turn when he fails to rescue Timmy from the clutches of the Mutant Megan, a half-human, half-mutant creature born from a failed resurrection process. His failure leads him to despair, and Eric’s condition worsens when he tries to take another life using the same revival method. As a result of his attempt, Megan again mutates, this time into an even more horrifying form. Eric’s struggles and his inability to redeem himself emotionally and psychologically finally take a toll on him.

One of these entries, particularly, stands out as he learns that Marian, Eric’s late fiancée, died. This entry reveals a tragedy that sets the tone for Eric’s character. Here, his emotional fragility and fear of losing anyone else start to emerge, setting him up for what’s to come.

A Fatal Accident and Self-Redemption

Marianne, Eric’s past love interest, appears repeatedly throughout the game. What is essential to remember, however, is that Marie, Timmy, and Eric did not start exploring the forest together until quite late into the game’s storyline. Eric and Marion had planned to reunite on the island. Instead, in a twist filled with unexpected tragedy, his car overturns while the two attempt to drive along the rough terrain, putting both at risk of great harm.

Fumbling Through Crisis

Throughout their journey together, the parents struggle with their grief due to Marion’s demise in the previous accident. Ultimately, Eric fails again after trying to get help at the last plane crash to save Timmy, making his actions irreparable, and thus seals his emotional downward spiral. Even as this occurs, Marian, an apparition only visible to Eric, emerges to mourn the death.
