What happened to the man who betrayed the Spartans?
In the ancient world, betrayal and its consequences were a common theme that captured the imagination of people. In 480 BCE, the Battle of Thermopylae took place, which showcased the bravery and sacrifice of the Spartan 300, led by King Leonidas against the invading Persian army. However, amongst their ranks was a traitor by the name of Ephialtes who handed over a secret path to the Persian King Xerxes, making their victory impossible. But, who was this Ephialtes and what became of him?
Who is Ephialtes?
According to historical records, Ephialtes was a Malian Greek who came from the city of Trachis in modern-day Greece. He was once an ally of the Spartans and lived in the city of Trachis near the Thermopylae strait. Ephialtes was a man known for his greedy nature and desire for wealth.
Unfortunately, his desire for wealth led him to accept a bribe from King Xerxes and betray the Spartans. As a result, he showed them the path by which the Persians could circle behind the Spartans and flank their line, ultimately leading to their destruction. In return, Ephialtes received a large sum of gold coins as a reward.
The Life After the Betrayal
Immediately after the Battle of Thermopylae, Ephialtes fled back to his hometown of Trachis with a large sum of gold coins gained as a reward for his betrayal. Many Spartan warriors, including King Leonidas’ brother, Cleomenes I, vowed to avenge his treachery. To maintain his safety, Ephialtes formed an alliance with the Persian Prince and Commander, Hydarnes.
Some years later, in approximately 470 BCE, Ephialtes encountered Athenades, a powerful individual from Trachis, with the intention of marrying his daughter in hopes of gaining more land. According to historical records, before this marriage could take place, Athenades killed Ephialtes in 470 BC in a private vendetta related to his betrayal.

At every level, Ephialtes were a man without a title who never achieved anything greater significance.
