An eldritch god is often described as a being or entity that is hugely powerful, defying human understanding and inspiring fear. They are from a realm beyond human conception, and their existence cannot be fully grasped without driving one mad. Additionally, these gods are seen as utterly incomprehensible, with languages and concepts that are non-human and impossible to explain.

Characteristics of Eldritch Gods

Common characteristics of eldritch gods include:

• Incomprehensible Language: Their language is unintelligible, and even attempting to write it down can drive those who try to do so mad.
• Uncanny Appearance: They don’t conform to human comprehension of beauty or aesthetics and are often described as disgusting, grotesque, and unsettling.
• Abysmal Power: Stupendously and apocalyptically powerful beyond human imagination, influencing the fabric of reality with their mere presence.
• Alien Nature: Non-human, alien, and unconnected from human experience, making interactions with them impossible for a mortal mind to comprehend or survive.

Examples of Eldritch Gods

• Azathoth (The Blind Idiot God): The most potent and powerful of all gods, Azathoth defies comprehension, with many referring to his being more unknowable than the void that lies beyond the stars. His existence is a stain on the fabric of time and space.

• Cthulhu (Ph`rggglyphic Name): A gargantuan, tentacled creature from the dawn of man. Lovecraft masterfully crafted Cthulhu as a being inhumanly powerful, corrupting and destroying all whom it encounters.

• Yog-Sothoth (The All): A being of immense size and power, Yog-Sothoth is credited with the ability to understand all knowledge and secrets buried in the fabric of eternity. His power is incomparable, and his existence ensures the eternal struggle between mortality and the abyss.

Types of Eldritch Gods:

Azathothian Gods

These gods are subservient to the power of Azathoth, embodying his omnipotence and chaos. Beings like H’ai and Zo are examples of entities that serve Azathoth, spreading madness and cosmic horror.

Dagonian Gods

Falling under the influence of Dagon, Dagonian gods are corrupted by the sea god and are often depicted as disgusting, aquatic, and eerie. Examples include W’rm and Thokk.
