The game’s predecessor, Spec Ops: Airborne Assault, heavily influenced its design and playstyle. With Spec Ops already showing tremendous success, the Infinity Ward team aimed to create an immersive, thrilling, and realistic World War II-style FPS experience. The franchise’s name "Call of Duty" originated from military terminology, with a specific reference to Task Force Dagger, an Operation Medieval mission during the Vietnam War.
