In Overwatch, players are incentivized to remain committed to their competitive games by a penalty system, designed to discourage deliberate game leaving or abandoning one’s teammates. The system introduces increasingly harsh consequences as a player leaves more matches.
Starting with the First Leaving Violation:
For the first-time player leaving a competitive game without completing it, there’s a 15-minute suspension from competitive play. This suspension can take away some of the rewards players typically receive for participation.
Penalties Progress and Become More Severe with Frequency of Leaving Games
- Second-Time Leave: 30 minutes of suspension and reduction in competitive rating points
- Third-Time Leave: 2-hour suspension, ranking reduction, and XP penalization
- Frequent Leave: Suspended account or restricted ability to participate in competitive modes, affecting SR and gameplay progress
Leaves Result in Negative Impact on Ranked Placement
Players that constantly leave their matches contribute to the demoralizing, affecting not only individual placement but also team synergies, ultimately influencing matchmaking in Competitive Play.
Exceptions for Certain Circumstances
- Unexpected Circumstances: Player encounters server disconnections or technological issues. In rare situations, this can account for leaves that might affect your reputation. Report instances that can affect the verdict. In case of excessive unreportable instances (beyond an individual situation or not in response to user abuse), your IP Address is restricted for gameplay duration to reduce harm potential (up to 20-hour penalty, as part of security efforts).
