What is the toughest creature on Earth?

The Toughest Creature on Earth: An Exploration

The natural world is teeming with species that possess remarkable resilience, adaptability, and capabilities. But when it comes to finding the toughest creature on Earth, the accolade ultimately belongs to a tiny but mighty microscopic marvel – the tardigrade.

In this article, we will delve into the world of these extraordinary water bears and explore what makes them so extraordinary. We will discuss their incredible capabilities, extraordinary adaptability, and record-breaking feats.

Extreme Conditions, Check!

Tardigrades can withstand extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Up to 150°F (65°C) – no problem. At -253.95°C, that’s the temperature just a few degrees above absolute zero, and they survived without showing any signs of damage. They have even gone through the radiation of deep space, exposing them to doses of gamma radiation up to 1000Gy, 50,000 times stronger than on Earth.

Tardigrades can endure an absence of food and water for up to 10 years and pull through the effects of an 18-week exposure to air.

Adapting to the Wurled

As a survivalist, Tardigrades have no rivals when it comes to adaptability. They live in oceans, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, puddles, and even terrestrial environments – including temperate biomes, extreme deserts, and tundra-like areas. They coexist with both aquatic and terrestrial organisms and have found a way to thrive alongside each other, no matter where they come from!

Tardigrades change their physiology accordingly to different conditions. Under water loss, they alter their proteins and lipids to enter an anhydrobiotic state, drying up 95% of their mass to conserve resources. These little creatures show their adaptability prowess by having three different kinds of proteins in their cell membrane alone, allowing them to move effortlessly between an aquatic lifestyle to a purely terrestrial setting!

Masters of Space and Time

Astounding as they are already, Tardigrades’ capabilities aren’t over yet! It has recently been discovered they can spend an extended duration in extreme space-related conditions like cosmic radiation, extreme high vacuum, high pressure conditions (up to 8 atmospheres – twice Earth’s pressure!). No temperature fluctuations beyond 95°F (35°C), humidity, water loss or nutrient scarcity would be considered out of reach under normal circumstances but, by a stroke of genius engineering by Mother Nature, those incredible creatures keep thriving regardless of the adversity.

Other organisms, animals, might seem to keep up just fine, perhaps. When they’re young and not dealing with intense conditions regularly – but take them anywhere extreme, throw in stress factors, have them perform without food resources for multiple months, at extreme rates and temperatures at once without dying, survive an interstellar journey from space directly, and live up that whole ordeal no matter who and what may come (worms may eat our young, then). As the true champions of extremes on Earth, one would require these microscopic yet giantly formidable_ bears**, the so-called microscopics (so microscopic they wouldn’t catch any attention yet so the same time very big & incredible) which I here label as one among earth animals of the extreme – ’cause they fit best those titles.
