What Was the First MMORPG Released?
In the midst of the burgeoning gaming universe, a revolution was emerging – Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). The dawn of internet connectivity and personal computers (PCs) enabled countless gamers to embark on colossal adventures, join forces with fellow adventurers, and thrive in virtual realms. A slew of renowned gamers continue to ask the intriguing question – what was the first MMORPG released?
Origins of Multiplayer and Online Gaming
MMORPG pioneers were drawn from the precursors of modern gaming innovations. In 1977, Auction System introduced auction-based role-playing to players, albeit without a real-time interconnection. Then, Multi-User Dungeon‘s (MUD’s) advent in 1978 revolutionized text-based, cooperative multiplayer gaming [1]. It was Islands of Kesmai, a game developed and published by CompuServe in 1984, which marked an essential milestone [2][3].
Why Islands of Kesmai Paved the Way
* **Innovations included client-based UI improvements; real-time updating; action-based combat system; role assignment.
These novelties laid the foundation for succeeding MMORPGs (see Figure 1.).
Commercial Success or Failure?
From the dawn of MMORPGs to the ’90s, the medium continued to shape-shift within the shadows. BBS (Bulletin Board Services) played an essential support role in linking players throughout the ’80s but eventually declined.
Early Protocols:
Internet connectivity facilitated interconnection at an incredible speed. Web-based applications Telnet (1990) and Dial-UP** further enabled 24/7 access within the burgeoning world of computing.
- Windows‘ and Lynx Browser appearance (1994) ushered in HTML-based interactive interfaces. HTTP (80) protocol empowered the real-time, fast-paced worlds of early web-based virtual realms.
Web-based client-server systems also emerged via Oracle Internet-based infrastructure development.
Subsequent innovations Java, Cocoa, JavaScript, and numerous other front-ending architectures advanced Internet-wide MMORPGs throughout the 20th. Century.
We now address the million-dollar question on everyone’s lips: how did these games shape early MMORPGs
and where we are these days?

**Modern MMORPGs:
- Real-time player interaction; instant messaging.
