When Should You Call for Skill Checks?
As Dungeons & Dragons players and DMs, we’re no strangers to the world of skill checks. These calculations can be crucial in deciding whether we’re victorious, unfortunate, or somewhere in between. But when exactly do we need to call for those trusty roll-to-mathematics? Let’s dive into the answer below.
What are skill checks, anyway?
Before we get into when to call for them, let’s quickly recap what skill checks are. According to the official 3.5e rule book, skill checks are abilities that determine the outcome of a situation, be it combat, exploration, persuasion, or anything else your character tries to accomplish using their skills. This rolls involve the character’s attributes, their skill proficiency bonuses, and sometimes, miscellaneous modifiers like advantage, penalty, or bonus.
