Where Did the Sinnoh Region Come From?
Overview
The Sinnoh region, the setting of the fourth generation of Pokémon games, has an interesting history. The Sinnoh region is primarily based on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and southern parts of Russia’s Sakhalin, as well as the contested Kunashir Island.
The Inspiration
Inspiration for the Sinnoh region comes from its unique geography, with volcanoes, forests, snow-covered mountains, and coastline regions. This diverse range of environments led to a varied ecosystem, making Sinnoh an exciting destination for Pokémon and trainers. The region is home to 107 different species, offering a unique and fresh start for new trainers to begin their adventure.
Is Sinnoh Based on a Real-Life Place?
The Sinnoh region is heavily based on the Japanese island of Hokkaido and the southern part of the Russian island Sakhalin, as well as Kunashir, which is contested by both Japan and Russia. Hokkaido is Japan’s largest northern island and is famous for its natural beauty, rich culture, and friendly inhabitants. Sakhalin is a significant island between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean. Both locations have vast areas of unspoiled wilderness, volcanic regions, and unique landscapes that drew inspiration for the Sinnoh region.
