Who Can You Not Marry in Skyrim?
In the vast open world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can marry almost anyone with a romantic interest in your character. However, there are some NPCs who cannot be married due to game programming limitations. In this article, we’ll delve into the world of Skyrim marriages and reveal who cannot be married, along with the reasons behind it.
Jarl Balgruuf The Elder – Unmarriable and Imperfectly Perfect
Unfortunately, one of the first Jarls you meet, Jarl Balgruuf The Elder, is among the non-marryable NPCs in Skyrim. You cannot wed this esteemed Jarl, but who can blame you for not wanting to upset the harmony of Whiterun Hold?
Astrid – Voice Type Restricting
Astrid, the Night Mother’s Whisper, cannot be married. The reason for this limitation lies in the voice types used in Skyrim. NPCs with voiced marriage lines, which indicate the game recognizes them as a valid marriage partner, cannot be married to those who lack these recorded lines. In Astrid’s case, her voice type is incompatible with marriage, leaving us to pine for other, more receptive suitors.
Teldryn Sero – Unique Situation
Another notable absence from the list of marriables is Teldryn Sero, a Dunmer mage found in Winterhold. Though you can persuade him to join you on your travels, unfortunately, he won’t exchange his vows with your character.
Elisif the Fair – Another Jarl Disappointment
Elisif the Fair, Jarl of Whiterun, also cannot be married. Another Jarl and another heartbreak – seems like marriage is out of the question for those at the helm of Skyrim’s greatest cities!
Sapphire – More than a Shimmer, Less than a Wife
Sapphire, an enchanting woman found in the Imperial Camp, doesn’t spark with romantic chemistry, alas, making her another addition to the non-marryable list. Though you might find yourself enchanted by her charm, marriage will not be part of your storyline with Sapphire.
Marryability by Factions
An interesting observation has been made regarding marriability: some NPCs cannot be married until their associated factions have been joined. For example, Brynjolf becomes a suitable spouse after you’ve become the Thieves Guild master, while Marcurio from the Dark Brotherhood must have his association with your character solidified before his affection can blossom.
Unmarriable but Enchanting NPCs
As we explored the limits of Skyrim marriage, some standout NPCs with captivating stories or intriguing characters didn’t make the cut. For now, their romantic inclinations remain exclusive to imagination or, as the game so kindly permits, fleeting romances that never solidify into committed relationships.
In conclusion, while most characters in Skyrim are eager to tie the knot with you, certain NPCs with incompatible voice types, exclusive associations, or game mechanics limiting their romance options unfortunately remain unmarriable. As we continue our journeys through Skyrim, keep these non-marryables in mind – perhaps as alluring unrequited loves or endearing memories rather than eligible spouses.
