Who Chooses the Order of Triggers?
When playing Magic: The Gathering, triggered abilities can arise during various game phases. Sometimes, multiple triggers might need to resolve at the same time, which raises the question: who chooses the order of triggers?
Who chooses the order of triggers?
The Magic: The Gathering community provides two general rules to resolve triggered abilities: Priority Bullying and APNAP Order. Here, we will focus on APNAP (Active Player, Nonactive Player) Order.
Active Player, Nonactive Player (APNAP) Order
The APNAP Order dictates the sequence in which players add triggered abilities to the stack. The rules for resolving multiple triggered abilities simultaneously can be found in the Comprehensive Rules of Magic, 303.5m: "When a player has multiple triggered abilities that they are to put on the stack at the same time, they can decide in what order they want those abilities to be put on the stack." (emphasis mine)
To put this in a nutshell, each player is responsible for the triggered abilities on their own cards and gets to choose the order in which those abilities go onto the stack. The non-active player, or any player other than the current player, cannot control or manipulate the active player’s choices.
The Significance of Priority
Here, it is crucial to understand the concept of Priority. When two or more abilities attempt to resolve at the same time, the one on top of the stack, called the "most recent triggered ability" or MTA, goes on last. The other abilities then get put onto the stack in the order decided by the player whose trigger occurred most recently. For a comprehensive example of Priority Resolution, see [Insert example]
Triggers Resolution Timeline
When faced with multiple triggers, a well-timed choice of Priority Bullying or APNAP Order can lead to powerful strategies. Below, I provide a summary of how triggered abilities can arise in various game phases, grouped into categories with sample game events.
Summary
In the Magic: The Gathering universe, who chooses the order of triggers is essential knowledge. With this newfound insight, players can improve their decision-making, maximize strategic advantage, and build even stronger decklists. Keep these principles in mind: priority resolution, multiple trigger sequencing, and choosing APNAP Order can mean all the difference between a solid gameplay and an advantageous match outcome.
