Who is Mega Man’s Rival?
Mega Man is one of the most iconic and beloved game characters of all time. As a series, it has spawned numerous titles and characters over the years. At the core of this franchise is the eternal battle between two formidable foes: Mega Man, a brilliant and skilled robotic plumber, and his arch-nemesis, Bass, the genetically enhanced robot designed for one thing: to defeat and conquer. So, who is this sinister being who seems to be the perfect mirror of our protagonist?
The Battle Between Rival Robots
In the classic Mega Man series, Bass first appeared as Dr. Wily’s primary opponent for Robot Masters. He is described as having a strong personality, ambition, and a desire to become the best and strongest robot ever built. What sets him apart is his self-proclaimed superiority, always ready to challenge and surpass any opponents he encounters. Despite Mega Man’s numerous victories against other adversaries, Bass remains undaunted in his pursuit of supremacy. With Forte, one of Wily’s most elite soldiers, in his arsenal, the dynamic of robot rivalry is set for another bout.
The Enmity with Mega Man
What drove these two robots to perpetual battle and rivalry? It started in the early days, with each as a mere prototype: Prototype Mega Man, Mega Man-1, was forged for utility and practicality; Prototype Bass, an evolutionary derivative, was designed for optimal efficiency, but with a twist of individual ambition to surpass his former ‘copycat’ counterpart.
• Early encounters between them are fraught with tension, as their fierce rivalry escalates each time they confront in battle.
• Dr. Light, Mega Man’s creator, attributes Bass’s behavior to Wily’s relentless pursuit of power; for himself, Bass sees their battle as a means to prove he can supplant Mega Man’s hero and assert his dominance.
Zero vs Mega Man: A Short yet Decisive Encounter
This section could be a highlight: we see a flash forward through the Mega Man Zero series, an RPG spinoff focused on Zero, now w/o the virus, the mysterious Maverick Hunter in disguise from the original MM3.
H3 – Zero, no doubt, is Bass’s next target!
From Bass’s perspective, Zero (MM-Zero) is viewed as another "sentry" to be dislodged, as he was earlier dispatched by Mega Man during World 3 events; though Zero’s absence did expose Bass’s true form before fleeing.
Captain N, His Other Rival and Mentor-Apprentice Relation
In the Captain N series, Mega Man participates alongside another rival, N MegaLink. MegaMan finds unity with N for combating dark forces, but this duo exhibits mixed feelings, as there seem two sides to these partners**
• MegaLink N rivalry: N takes command but is not free to create on his own; an emotional detachment between them starts manifest due to this conflictual leadership.
• Mental Health Tensions: One party holds the other; emotions between them become tainted: The rivalry is amplified between characters now, with even mutual growth hindered and in N’s case becoming re-captured by external authority through his own hand at controlling MegaLink Mega.
With this, we end Mega’s rivalry with Bass on topmost level.
