The Greatness of Durin
Among the many renowned Dwarves of Middle-earth, Durin I is often considered the greatest of them all. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic high fantasy series, Durin was the founder of Khazad-dûm and the first King of Durin’s Folk, known as the Longbeard Dwarves.
Legendary Ancestors
Before examining Durin’s greatness, let us take a glance at his incredible ancestral lineage. His father was Máni, one of the greatest craftsmen among the Dwarves. Máni founded Nogrod, a land that would eventually become famous for its exquisite beauty and craftsmanship.
- Direct Descendancy: Durin descended directly from the Ancestry of Manwë, the noble Angel of the sky. Manwë was also the lover of Varda, one of the Three Elf-ladies. Hence, Durin and the Longbeards were half-Numenorean.
- Skilled Craftsmen: Both Durin and his son Náin I are skilled craftsmen and inventors of high renown in Middle-earth history. They are revered for their creative masterpieces.
Founding Khazad-dûm and Kingdom
As the eldest of twenty-four siblings, Durin’s destiny unfolded as follows:
- First King: After the deaths of his eleven fathers, Durin became the leader of Khazad-dûm (Mithlôrig) and began to spread out his clan across various caverns of Middle-earth.

Durin’s reign led to massive migration and eventual colonization. With his people established, his father Máni advised Durin on craftsmanship and gave him the gift of unearthing rich veins of precious mineral riches.
