Taking advantage of Ellie’s weakened condition, the Seraphites hang both Ellie and her mother during a sermon like ritual with a leader named David with the intention to ritually kill Ellie but her friends and allies rushed in stopping the ritual
Joel’s Death Sets Ellie Free
In summary, it is evident that Abby chose to kill Joel to maintain her family tradition, particularly her father and brother. The act will lead both Ellie and herself into severe consequences and possibly death the end of world. But Ellie is set free since she had fought and resisted the hanging until she recovered and her body began bleeding.
