Why did Basim Betray Assassins?
In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Basim’s allegiance switched sides, leaving his fellow Assassin’s Creed allies bewildered. This change of heart was a direct result of his Isu past catching up with him. Through his journey, Basim’s memories resurfaced, revealing the truth about his past life as an Isu named Loki and the torment Odin bestowed upon his family.
Loki’s Revenge
As Isu, Basim – or Loki as he is known – wanted revenge for the injustices done to him and his family at the hands of Odin, the All-Father god. Odin not only condemned Loki’s lover, Aletheia, to limbo but also imprisoned Fenrir, the Ases. This senseless cruelty resonated deeply within Basim, fueling his vengeful ambition.
The Staff of Hermes Trismegistus, in Basim’s possession, allowed him to relive his memories. With it, he revisited past traumas and began uncovering the dark secrets underlying the Assassin’s Creed Order. By recalling the past, Basim finally understood the purpose behind their actions and recognized the treachery and deceit emanating from Odin’s court.
Unconventional Means, Uniting the Sages
After his transformation into a sage, Basim aligned with the ancient Isu faction, embracing an unconventional quest for vengeance and reunification. He discovered the extent of Odin’s machinations and realized the need for a different path, recognizing that the existing Order stood in the way of reunifying his scattered family, including his daughter, Astrid.
To accomplish his goals, Basim turned to an alliance between the Isu and humans, a symbiosis few could comprehend or support. This bond of blood forged a new pact, bringing together those disenchanted with the corrupt Assassin Order.
Reappraising Betrayal
The reason for Basim’s betrayal becomes palpable when reexamined through the context of Isu history, where an Isu once played on the shoulders of a demon. In contrast, during his human years, Loki, the fallen angel Azura, made amends by saving human destiny. To save it once more, he defected from his fellow members, the Ases to the Norns. Both instances, where the Icu defied his side, reveal Loki’s ultimate goal: justice.
