Why is there no Sonic Mania 2?

Since its release in 2017, Sonic Mania has been hailed as one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog games of all time. With its fast-paced gameplay, colorful graphics, and nostalgia-inducing levels, it’s no wonder that fans are eagerly waiting for a sequel. So, why haven’t we seen a Sonic Mania 2?

Changing Priorities at Sega

One of the main reasons for the lack of a Sonic Mania 2 is the shifting priorities at Sega, the company behind the Sonic franchise. With the rise of other gaming franchises and genres, such as Fortnite and battle royale games, Sega’s focus has shifted away from traditional platformers like Sonic.

Move Away from Pixel Art Graphics

In an interview with Game Informer, Takashi Iizuka, the head of Sonic Team, revealed that one of the reasons for not making a Sonic Mania 2 is the team’s desire to move away from pixel art graphics. Iizuka stated, "When you make a 2D game using pixel art, you kind of end up targeting a very specific core audience."

Co-op and Multiplayer Considerations

Another reason for the lack of a Sonic Mania 2 is the consideration of co-op and multiplayer aspects. As mentioned in an interview with Nintendo Life, the game’s design was focused on single-player experiences, which may make it difficult to implement a multiplayer mode that would appeal to a wider audience.

Competing Interests at Sega

Seems like Sega has their hands full with other projects, Sonic Team has been working on other projects, such as Sonic Forces and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. This is a possible reason why we haven’t seen a new Sonic Mania game.
