How do you make Altaria good?
Altaria is a decent dragon-type Pokémon, but with the right moves, item, and strategy, you can make it a formidable opponent on the battlefield. Here’s how to maximize your Altaria’s potential and make it a valuable addition to your team.
Item: Life Orb and Flying Gem
Altaria has a below-average HP and Attack, so boosting its damage and survivability is crucial. Life Orb amplifies damage and recoil by 50% when making a second strike, and Flying Gem doubles the speed when used from the right moves. Ensure you hold a Life Orb and attach Flying Gem to your Altaria to capitalize on these stats.
Moveset
Altaria’s base 70 Attack is rather subpar. To mitigate this, teach it a Dragon-type Dragon Claw, which also has decent physical damage potential. Add an Ancient Power, which does moderate special damage and has decent accuracy, giving you both physical and special coverage options. Rounding out its moveset should be an Ember, to provide another viable option to deal decent, albeit mediocre, fire damage.
Nature: Jolly (or Adamant)
Altaria lacks speed due to its weak base stats. As you’ll predominantly use Ancient Power, giving it an attacking boost may be essential, especially given its 120 base HP. While an Adamant nature offers slight damage reduction, I’ll recommend Jolly, for its better speed boosting your Ancient Power’s timing in battle, allowing your other Pokémon time to contribute during the clash.
Typing Advantages and Counterplay
Altaria possesses a strong typing: with its weakness to Rock- and Water-type attacks nullified thanks to Dragon-types’ weakness to same super effective weaknesses. While most Pokémon tend to dislike dual Dragon-Water moves against Altaria, make an exception where necessary:
| Vulnerable Against… | Strengths in Response… | Counter-Move Options: | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Electric / Fairy type | Avoid: Electric with Ancient Power’s moderate distance; Switch into Fairy resists against subsequent attacks if possible, ideally with HP to keep resisting. | |||
| Fairy-type move usage | Weakness mitigation as above | Ember provides a soft counter while building up Fire-type counters through Ember-boosting (if possible)<br/ | Water-type super effectiveness | Not applicable
|
| Keep in mind Rock-type has no relevant, super effective moves against Altaria. No need for caution here <br/. | ||||
| Lastly, Poison-type resist the Dragon weakness, effectively "shield" Altaria temporarily. Your Ancient Power usage should already be on alert for secondary damage as necessary. However, there remains a balance between counter-move options like Ember in its moveset. Avoid super effective type moves ?& | Rock-type attack suppression | & |
Counterplay becomes crucial if switching between units. Plan **Ancient Power usage after switching and using Em
